Earlier today, ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌ Superintendent of Schools Richard Chapman joined Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon, New York State Assemblyman William Magnarelli, members of the Onondaga County Legislature and representatives from several local school districts to announce the launch of the School Bus Safety Program.

Every day, thousands of children across Onondaga County begin and end their school day with a trip on a school bus. As part of the School Bus Safety Program, more than 500 county buses - including Liverpool CSD buses - have been equipped with Verra Mobility’s state-of-the-art cameras.

Starting next week, the system will identify any vehicle passing a stopped school bus with its stop-arm extended and lights flashing. Once that happens, cameras will record video of the vehicle and capture event images, including the vehicle, its license plate, and the extended stop arm. The violation video and license plate images will be reviewed by law enforcement, and violators will receive citations in the mail from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department in the hope that they change their behavior moving forward.

These programs are in place across the United States and are proven to work. Parents can rest assured that the district is doing everything possible to keep their kids safe.
